There is no "personal information" required, other than a credit card number, and no charges are made to the card until AFTER a lesson has been held and approved by you. None of my previous students has ever had a problem (including prompt refunds of unused balances from prepaid plans, etc.) My own information is also on file (so that they can pay me), and I have never had a problem with payments. If you have any further concerns, then I suggest you call Wyzant directly to discuss your concerns; use the toll-free number listed on the website. You can also ask them for MY telephone numbers (both at home and my personal cell phone) and/or have them send me your number(s) and I'll give you a call. Yes, I would be willing to tutor you daughter in American history, and Setauket is quite convenient. (I live in Middle Island, and am on campus at SBU at least twice a week). However, you contacted me via the Wyzant service, so there is no way for us to exchange phone numbers and discuss things directly until you register your billing information with Wyzant (and, as a Wyzant subcontractor, I cannot legally accept cash payments directly from you). Please note, however, that no charges made to your credit card (or Paypal account, etc.) until AFTER we have actually had a lesson. Hello. I am interested in doing additional tutoring in math, science, writing, and other academic subjects, as well as test-prep. I am a very-experienced teacher and tutor for mathematics and the physical sciences and have been doing private tutoring in these and other academic subjects for over 20 years. For over 30 years, I have been teaching college courses in these subjects (as well as computer science), as an Adjunct Professor at several Long Island colleges and universities. I am also a professional writer (with thousands of published pages), journal editor, and radio broadcaster. My postgraduate training was originally in Physics X-Ray Diffraction and Crystallography, and most of my professional career was spent at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), where I began as an X-Ray Crystallographer. However, I gradually transitioned into the then-new fields of computer programming, systems analysis, and software development, and most of my work at BNL (and also at Grumman Aerospace, American Science, Robotic Vision, Microsoft, and other companies) has been in the automation of physics experiments, nuclear reactor simulation, control of particle accelerators, automated test equipment, operating systems, and similar areas. Hello. I would be glad to help your son with pre-calculus and tutoring in mathematics (and other academic subjects), if we can arrange a mutually-convenient schedule. Please tell me when he is available on school day afternoons, and on weekends. (Also, please tell me his name!) I teach mathematics, physics, and computer science as an Adjunct Professor at several colleges, and have been tutoring, for many years, in math, science, writing, and other academic subjects (as well as "test-prep" for SAT, GRE, MCAT, etc.) I've also been quite successful with youngsters needing math enrichment (and/or motivation), and can supply references upon request, As you can see from my profile, I prefer to stress concepts and explanations, so that the student actually understands the subject. (I believe understanding is far more beneficial than temporary memorization of phrases, formulae, etc.). My undergraduate degree was a B. S. in Mathematics; my postgrad studies were in physics (as a PhD candidate) and later in computer science. My industry career was mostly in computer software development and systems programming for process control (as well as the management thereof), at several Long Island companies, including Grumman Aerospace, Robotic Vision, American Science, and Brookhaven National Laboratory. A brief profile is available on the web at: http://professorbam.com Details of my background are available via links at http://abcdunlimited.com/bam/ Feel free to contact me directly, if you require further information or have any questions. Sincerely, -/bam/- Bruce Alan Martin Professor "BAM" P.O.Box 456, Middle Island, LI, NY 11953 (631) 924-8680 =home (631) 332-0567 =cell EMAIL: bam@professorbam.com Hello, Nate. Initially, I discarded your inquiry, because there was nothing in it to which I could respond appropriately. You seem to be seeking a tutor who can glance at standardized problems and immediately produce the standardized responses (i.e "teaching to the test"); if so, then I sincerely hope you can find what you are looking for. (Perhaps you are seeking a "tutor" who can do assignments for the "student" and submit them to achieve a passing grade, without necessarily achieving comprehension of the subject matter; in either case, my tutoring is not what you seem to be seeking.) As a scientist (for most of my career), I know that the essential quality is perception of information and understanding of concepts. In the real world, those who practice and apply scientific principles to practical achievements tend to use reference tables and compilations, rather than wasting their time in memorizing factoids and formulae. Instead, they achieve an understanding of the concepts, and the ability to deal with actual problems and apply the principles to solve them. (Only charlatans pride themselves on being able to show off by instantly spouting "off the top of my head" solutions to trivial, standardized problems, such as those routinely recycled and spiraled on the "standardized" tests.) My approach is to get the student to comprehend the subject, rather than reciting definitions, regurgitating formulas, etc. My teaching/tutoring philosophy (for math and science) is to focus on the underlying concepts, and to get the student to understand what is really going on -- rather than merely memorizing meaningless formulae. Most of my students find me both "patient" and "tolerant" (check out the student feedback in my profile on the Wyzant website!) and many wind up loving the math or science that they initially thought they hated. Upon request, I would be happy to provide references from several pleased parents or students. Perhaps my initial impression was mistaken, so if you are truly interested in a tutor who can teach the concepts, correct the misunderstandings, and lead the student to mastery of the subject matter, then I suggest we discuss this directly via telephone. You may obtain my number (or send me yours), once you register your billing information on the website. In any event, I wish you best of luck in your endeavors. Usually, tutoring is at the student's home, but often in a library, and sometimes I secure a classroom on a campus where I teach. My schedule varies all over the place, but Thursdays and Fridays are good all day, Mondays and Wednesdays are OK after noon (but heavily booked), and weekends are possible, too. My standard, undiscounted rates are posted on the website (and they also below in the messages). It's $90 per hour, but Wyzant offers discounts of up to 20%, and I can also drop the base rate somewhat, for certain kinds of tutoring on a regular, weekly basis. For one-up/standalone lessons, the standard rate is $90 per hour. However, Wyzant offers discounts of up to 20% for "packages" and I can drop the base rate further for lessons on a weekly basis (depending upon subject matter, location, frequency, etc.) TutorsTeach: Very experienced teacher & tutor: - 30+ years college teaching; Adjunct Prof. at several colleges. Many other references available. ^----- [[[ P.S. for discount rates. ]]] Just to be clear, my rate applies only to the actual contact hours, and does not include travel (nor preparation, communication, scheduling, etc.) Also, it is below the rate paid by my colleges for classroom contact hours. Nevertheless, I do understand that my rates are high, and there are many other tutors with much lower rates (as well as some with rates more than double mine!) I also have some flexibility regarding the hourly rate, and can sometimes reduce it a bit in certain circumstances (e.g. filling gaps, scheduling coincident with a nearby student , meeting at a closer location, etc.) However, I doubt I could lower it much more than another 20% or so -- which still would not bring it into the range you cite. P.S. The quoted rate is for one-at-a-time hours. Wyzant offers package discounts of up to 20%, and I can add something similar for lessons on a regular basis ==== Wyzant sample ==== Hi Jack, I’d love to help your son with his algebra course. I can’t guarantee results but over the last 20 years nearly all of my students have achieved a dramatic increase in grades, typically a whole letter grade or more. What I can promise is that I will be committed, accessible and caring. We’ll work together to customize a strategy for Timothy and execute the plan as a team. It’s amazing how much impact a private tutor can have in mathematics, particularly in the first few weeks. And when the grades start improving, it can be a fun process too. ======================= [[[ THANKS. ]]] Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it. Best of luck! bam (631) 332-0567.
